2013 - Annual Rankings: US Internet Search

Google is the Buzz leader out of the Internet Search sector, achieving a score of 21.3, well above number two Yahoo (13.1) and number three Bing (11.5). Google was also this year named among one of the top 15 LGBT brands by BrandIndex.

Google's top 10 trending topics of the year announced in a ‘Google Zeitgeist: Here’s to 2013’ video, included: Nelson Mandela, Paul Walker, iPhone 5, Cory Monteith, The Harlem Shake and Royal Baby.

Google Hangouts, an instant messaging platform launched in May to replace Google Talk, has been a successful new release for Google this year. Google also discontinued several products including Meebo, Google Reader, the customizable homepage iGoogle and Google Talk. Google’s latest financial update proved positive, with an increase of 12% in profits in Q3 2013 compared to the third quarter of last year. “Google had another strong quarter with $14.9bn in revenue and great product progress,” said Larry Page, Google’s CEO. “We are closing in on our goal of a beautiful, simple, and intuitive experience regardless of your device.”

Bing has achieved just shy of a 4-point rise this year, bringing it to the top of the Internet Search improvers list. Third in the category overall, the Microsoft-run search engine launched a new Bing homepage in September. The revamp would make the homepage ‘faster, cleaner, and more visually appealing,’ wrote the Bing team in a blog post announcing the revamp. Bing also launched a new product search experience in August to allow consumers to find products more easily.
