2013 - Annual Rankings: US Dining - Casual

Darden Restaurant's is the owner of the top two casual dining brands, Olive Garden and Red Lobster. The two chains have been tweaking their menu's in 2013. The nation's largest casual-dining company experimented with discounted prices which impacted margins, and turned to a lighter menu at Olive Garden and more non-seafood items at Red Lobster.

Darden announced late last year that they plan to spinoff or sell the Red Lobster business.
Hooters, the top Buzz improver for 2013, has been forthright about wanting to encourage women diners. The chain has been making over restaurants to make them more "sleek and comfortable" but their "Step Into Awesome" campaign received mixed reviews. BrandIndex data at the beginning of 2013 did however show that Buzz was higher for both male and female responders.

Methodology:

These brands were rated using YouGov BrandIndex’s Buzz score which asks respondents, "If you've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?"

The Buzz Rankings chart shows the brands with the highest average Buzz scores between January and December 2013. The Buzz Improvers chart ranks the brands with the highest increase in Buzz between Jan-Dec 2013 and the same period in 2012. Both scores are representative of the general population.

All Buzz scores listed have been rounded to a single decimal place, however, we have used additional precision to assign ranks.
