2012 - US Mid-Year Rankings

Welcome to the YouGov BrandIndex Buzz Rankings for the first half of 2012. The BrandIndex Buzz Rankings compare Buzz scores for more than 1100 brands in 41 categories, to reveal the US brands with the most positive Buzz in 2012 so far.

All of these brands were rated using YouGov BrandIndex’s Buzz score, which asks respondents, "If you've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?".

Subway is the top­-ranked brand for mid-year 2012, topping the overall Buzz list once more. The sandwich giant is joined for the first time by Olive Garden from the dining sector. YouTube also makes it onto the list as a new entry.

Subway tops the Buzz list for the third year in a row and is one of two
dining brands to make the top ten list.

Cheerios entered 2012 with two new cereal flavors, and gained attention after a satirical piece in The Onion was published about the Cheerios Honey Nut bee.

Amazon ranks highly following a successful year of trading – the Kindle Fire is the bestselling product on Amazon.com and its Q1 sales went up 34% to $13.18 billion.

History has brought us shows including Shark Wranglers, American Pickers, American Restoration and Pawn Stars, to name a few.

Ford has sold 1.14 million vehicles so far this year in the US, and had a 7% rise in sales in the year to June. Vehicles like the Escape, Fusion, Explorer and F-Series remain popular.

The documentary channel didn’t disappoint this year with shows such as American Chopper, Cash Cab, Frozen Planet, Man Vs Wild and Deadliest Catch.

A wave of Lowe’s store openings – 6 in January 2012 – increased attention for the home store which has also built a strong social media presence on Twitter and YouTube.

Olive Garden is a newbie to the top ten list, being placed at 11th in December 2011 but gained coverage for a local newspaper restaurant review that went viral in March 2012.

YouTube has made it to the top 10 – video highlights for 2012 so far include a behind-the-scenes look at a McDonald’s photoshoot a Gotye cover and and Lil’ Wayne Ft Bruno Mars.

Google gained enormous reach in 2011 with the launch of Google+. Its Android phones command 50% of the smartphone market although the search giant dropped 6 places.
