Apple is the Buzz leader in the Telecommunications and Technology sector, bolstered by successful iPhone and iPad product launches and the goodwill building up for the brand after the passing of founder Steve Jobs. Apple has a substantial lead over the other brands in the sector, which are grouped tightly from second to fifth. Sony was able to withstand a number of network issues with their PlayStation Network to remain in the top three within the sector.
Two of the top five movers are cable providers, with Time Warner Cable and Cablevision both making statistically significant improvements while buzz scores remain negative. The purchase of Skype by Microsoft in 2011 helped boost Buzz scores and lifted the brand to the second largest improvement in the sector.
These brands were rated using YouGov BrandIndex’s Buzz score which asks respondents, "If you've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?"
The Buzz Rankings chart shows the brands with the highest average Buzz scores between January and December 2011. The Buzz Improvers chart ranks the brands with the highest increase in Buzz between Jan-Dec 2011 and the same period in 2010. Both scores are representative of the general population.
All Buzz scores listed have been rounded to a single decimal place, however, we have used additional precision to assign ranks.
