2015 - Mid-Year Rankings: Saudi Arabia Top Buzz Rankings

(1) Samsung (Non-mover)
The South Korean tech giant claims the Buzz crown once again, as it unveiled several exciting new products this year including the Galaxy S6 and its Edge variants, the Samsung Gear VR (a virtual reality headset), the SUHDTV and the Samsung Gear range of smart-watches, which generated generous amounts of positive Buzz for the brand.

(2) WhatsApp (Brand new entry)
The Facebook-owned mobile messaging app makes its first appearance in the top 10, as mobile usage skyrockets in the Kingdom and the brand becomes the most used instant messaging service and most popular social media platform among Saudis and expatriates.

(3) Apple (Non-mover)
The California-based tech conglomerate sticks to its position in third place, following the opening of new Apple outlets by Saudi retailer eXtra at the end of last year. The much-awaited launch of the Apple Watch, new Macbook and the announcement of the new iOS, OS X, the Apple Music streaming service and the Apple Pay service also helped the brand maintain positive Buzz in 2015 so far.

(4) Al Baik (Up one place)
The home-grown fast food chain, which has over 30 branches in the Western region of Saudi Arabia and plans to open more in the Al Qaseem province, climbs one place to number four. The company continued its tradition of sponsoring community initiatives this year, such as the Please Park it Right campaign and Anti-Littering campaign in Jeddah which produced great amounts of positive Buzz.

(5) Apple iPhone (Up five places)
Apple’s star smartphone ascends to fifth place as Saudi retailer eXtra opened new Apple outlets in the Kingdom late last year. Additionally, the “Shot by iPhone 6” campaign, which highlighted the handset’s remarkable camera image quality, the announcement of the iOS9 and the introduction of services such as Apple Music and Apple Pay also generated positive Buzz for the mobile brand.

(6) Almarai (Up two places)
The Riyadh-based dairy company moves up two places to claim the sixth position in the first half of 2015. The firm enjoyed profits of over 378 million riyals in the first quarter of 2015. The Kingdom’s home-grown brand is a household name across the Middle East and is renowned for its tagline “Quality You Can Trust”.

(7) Google (Down five places) and Visa (Non-mover)
Google: The multi-national technology company plummets five places in the first half of 2015 in the Kingdom. Still, the brand stays in the top 10 as it improves its digital services, such as its Gmail service and AdSense online targeted advertising service, and introduces new apps and services such as Google Photos.

Visa Inc.: The financial services corporation maintains high levels of Buzz as ecommerce transactions continue to grow in the Middle East with Saudi Arabia being one of the driving forces behind this exponential growth. The company continued its vigorous sponsorship strategy this year, by continuing to support sporting bodies such as FIFA and the NFL.

(8) YouTube (Brand new entry)
YouTube enters the Top 10 at number eight as the Kingdom continues to rank as the country with the highest mobile usage on the video-sharing site. In the past year alone, over 90 million videos were viewed on the Google-owned service in the Kingdom daily. The brand’s entry also comes as it rolls out a beta (tester) version of Music Key across the region which aims to revolutionize the streaming service industry.

(9) Galaxy (Down five places)
The best-selling chocolate brand in the country falls five places to ninth position. Owned by Mars Incorporated, Galaxy expanded its presence in the region last year by opening a $60 million chocolate factory in the Kingdom, helping cater to the huge demand for the brand’s products. The brand is set to introduce new products to the region such as an instant hot chocolate powder and new chocolate flavors such as “Cookie Crumble”, which should help sustain Buzz throughout the year.

(10) Toyota (Brand new entry)
The best-selling car brand in Saudi Arabia enters the Buzz rankings at number 10 as the Japanese firm unveiled an all-new model of its Camry Sedan accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign highlighting its bold styling and sporty features. Its Hilux pickup model and Corolla, Camry and Yaris Sedans featured in the Kingdom’s best-selling car models list with Toyota selling 299,707 vehicles in 2014.

Methodology: 

These brands were rated using YouGov BrandIndex’s Buzz score which asks respondents, “If you've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?”

Buzz scores can range from 100 to -100 and are compiled by subtracting negative feedback from positive. A zero score means equal positive and negative feedback.​

The Buzz Rankings chart shows the brands with the highest average Buzz score between January and June 2015.Scores are representative of the general population. All Buzz scores listed have been rounded to a single decimal place.
