Low cost carriers lead the way in the Airline sector with Southwest and JetBlue at one and two. Despite plane and passenger issues in 2011, Southwest continues to generate the highest Buzz rating in the category by a substantial margin. "Bags Fly Free" and "Rapid Rewards" were two major programs for Southwest this year that helped the brand continue its leadership position.
International airlines lead the pack (four of five improvers), as domestic airlines generally lost brand momentum in 2011. British Airways had a difficult 2010 with strikes, snow and natural disasters all causing flight delays and cancellations. The airline dramatically improved sentiment in 2011, leading the airline category with a significant 2 point year over year improvement in a category largely featuring declining consumer ratings.
These brands were rated using YouGov BrandIndex’s Buzz score which asks respondents, "If you've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?"
The Buzz Rankings chart shows the brands with the highest average Buzz scores between January and December 2011. The Buzz Improvers chart ranks the brands with the highest increase in Buzz between Jan-Dec 2011 and the same period in 2010. Both scores are representative of the general population.
All Buzz scores listed have been rounded to a single decimal place, however, we have used additional precision to assign ranks.
