Apple is the laptop brand most often cited by consumers likely to make a purchase in the next six months, followed by Dell.
At 26%, Apple outpaces Dell (22%) and HP (20%) in the current year to date. Other well-known brands such as Lenovo, Toshiba, Acer and Compaq all score lower than 10%.
However, grouped together, those brands other than Apple, Dell and HP are slowly taking a bigger piece of the future purchase consideration pie for laptops. In 2011, their aggregate number was 25% -- the number is now 32%. That small growth over the past three years has stemmed from ASUS (+3), Compaq (+3), Lenovo (+2), and Toshiba (+2).
In the desktop category, Dell increased its commanding lead from 30% in 2011 to 35% today as the brand most often cited by consumers likely to make a purchase in the next six months. HP has also increased its score over the same period, from 24% to 26%, while Apple slipped from 18% to 17%.
In the same sector, the aggregate of non-Apple, Dell and HP brands has decreased in purchase consideration, pulling back from 25% to 22%, driven mainly by small PC manufacturers.
YouGov BrandIndex’s Intended Purchase score is derived from asking respondents: "From which brand are you most likely to purchase your next computer?” and separately asking those same respondents when they intend to make their next purchase. A score can range from 0 to 100%.
